NH Fish Log: mid July on Winnipesaukee

Recently, I took a week’s vacation on New Hampshire’s big lake. With a lot of warm weather, water surface temps were in the upper 70s and the thermocline was well set up. This was where most of the fish were: deep.

The water was beautiful. Fish were all over the place, but again… deep. Even the smallmouth bass were deep – typically on the bottom in 30′-40′ of water.

Never any shortage of wildlife on Winni. Last year I saw a cow moose swimming just off of Rattlesnake Island, which is in the middle of the lake!

As we watched this sunset, young salmon were chasing a hatch – literally jumping out the water in pursuit. Winnipesaukee is a spectacular place to fish,
